OXNARD STUDENT DIGI FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Films from Oxnard, California to Alexandria, Virginia took honors at the Oxnard Student Digi Film Festival, held October 22 and 23 at the Plaza 14 Theatres in downtown Oxnard.

Festival Director, George Ortega, announced the awards at the conclusion of the festival. Ortega said, “I think this is our best festival ever; the films were really great this year.”

The college division awards divided primarily between students from Oxnard and Moorpark Colleges, with crowd favorites such as the comedy, “The Adventures of Lucky and Pepe” by Ricardo Ortega and experimental film “Sketch” by Aubrey Byrne taking top honors in their categories, along with an award to Ventura College student, Roberto Perez, for his second place news entry, “Marcha por la Reforma.”

High school division awards went to students from across Ventura County, as well as to a pair of far-flung award recipients from Alexandria, Virginia: Hana Wuerker and Daniel Ardura. Crowd favorite, “Pacifica High School 2010,” by Jose Quintero, took first place in Music Video. “It was a pleasure to see such a diverse group of filmmakers in the high school division,” said Kitty Merrill, festival co-director. “We had strong films from students in high school video programs, but also from students in youth groups, such as Fillmore’s One Step Center, and CAPS4Kids in Ventura,”

This year’s People’s Choice Award, determined by popular vote of the festival audience, went to Oxnard College student Johnathan Portillo, for his film, “The Janitor’s Kid”, and was announced at the festival reception, held at Sugar Beets.

Students from Fillmore’s One Step Productions found themselves honored for the second time in three days. Their public service announcement, “Peer Pressure,” took first place at the festival, after having received an award at the CAPPIE awards in Ventura just two days before.

The student winners received a variety of prizes: including editing software from Adobe and Smart Sound, subscriptions to Lynda.com, an online tutorial website, a pocket video camera, books on video and film production from Focal Press, as well as gift certificates for meals at Ruby’s Café. Chad Smathers, from Moorpark College was the first place honoree in Drama in the college division and received a free rental package of grip equipment from EVS Rentals, worth over $1000.

The Saturday awards and reception were the culmination of the festival, which features two nights of screenings at the Plaza 14 Cinemas, and OC Filmmaker’s Day, a program of free workshops for students held at Oxnard College, sponsored by the college and the City of Oxnard Recreation Division.

The Oxnard Student Digi Film festival is an Oxnard Independent Film event and is sponsored by Oxnard College and the City of Oxnard.
